HOME COOKED CAT FOOD THAT IS HEALTHY AND SAFE FOR YOUR CAT

Cat food recipes published on this website do not substitute a professional veterinary advice.

PLEASE ALWAYS CONSULT WITH YOUR VETERINARIAN WHETHER A RECIPE IS SUITABLE FOR YOUR CAT.
This recipe is suitable for older cats diagnosed with chronic renal failure It is an alternative to commercial prescription diets such as Hill's k/d or Waltham's Renal Support from Royal Canin.

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 lb (250 g) liver
4 large or 5 small hard boiled eggs
4 cups (700g) white rice, cooked
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 (10g) teaspoons calcium carbonate (i.e. Tums or powdered egg shells)

Grind the liver (it is best to feed it raw), mix it together with the other ingredients.  Add 1 cat dose of a balanced vitamin + mineral suplement.

Palatability may be improved  by adding some water and warming it up  to body temperature. Do not add salt.

IMPORTANT!
Always provide clean fresh water! Cats with renal failure are unable to concentrate their urine which results in increased urination . They need to drink more to make up for  this extra water loss. If they are deprived of water, they could dehydrate quickly and die!
Many cats with renal failure will not have a great appetite. If your cat refuses to eat this diet, you may mix in some of his favorite food and then very gradually (minimum over 7 to 10 days) reduce it.  If he still refuses to eat it, then just tempt him with anything - it is always better when he eats something then nothing at all, because cats as opposed to dogs and humans start to break down their body protein already after 5 days of starvation
